Usha began her athletic journey as a 14-year-old junior and was crowned champion at her school by 1974. She went on to win four Gold Medals at the National School Meet, and the National Amateur Meet. She also broke two India-based national records in Nagpur in 1979. After a long and successful running career Usha attended Mercy College in Palghat and Providence College, Calicut. During her time at Providence College, she was influenced by her athletics coach O. M. Nambiar and he gave her the opportunity to participate in sports events.
