Leona Maguire leads 2022 LPGA Drive On Championship
Leona Maguire finished on 18-under at Fort Myers’ LPGA Drive On Championship. With a final-round 67, she became the first Irish woman in the LPGA Tour's top 100. Maguire's 198 total is also a career-high, tying her previous best of 15-under par in the 2021 Pelican Women's Championship.
Maguire is well aware of the historical impact her win on women's golf had on her country, as well as the tour. She is still processing the fame that it brought. After Maguire's February 2022 Drive On Championship win, even the president of Ireland congratulated them.
Marina Alex is second
Marina Alex has had a fantastic season, but that is not the only reason she's been successful. Alex had been out of work for almost seven months because of a back injury. Alex's schedule changed when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the United States. To keep her body fit, she had to do more exercise. Her back issues returned when competition resumed in September. She played through it, and was determined to get healthy in time for the end-of-year tournaments.
Alex has made every cut in the past. She was fourth at February's LPGA Drive On Championship. In California, she was also in form during the West Coast Swing. She tied for 35th at the Chevron Championship at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage and then tied for 10th at the DIO Implant L.A. Open at Wilshire Country Club in Los Angeles.
Annika Sorenstam will host a LPGA Tour event for 2023
Annika Sorenstam is hosting an LPGA Tour event 2023 in Tampa Bay. It will be dubbed the "Annika driving by Gainbridge@ Pelican" event and will be held at Pelican in Belleair. Sorenstam, a LPGA Hall of Famer, is the most decorated female pro golfer of all. It will be the LPGA Tour’s penultimate year-end event.
Sorenstam is busy hosting events around world. She co-hosts the Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed event alongside Henrik Stenson. Additionally, she co-hosted the Ginn Tribute event in Mount Pleasant, S.C., where she won a total 72 LPGA Tour events, 10 majors and is the all time money leader with more than $22 million. The US Senior Women's Open was her latest victory.
