Tina Estrada and her San Jose State women’s soccer squad are on a roll. We discuss Estrada's story and the Spartans' recent successes. We also discuss the university's mental healthcare resources for student-athletes.

Estrada's success

Hanson had a similar background to Estrada when she was made assistant coach of the San Jose State women’s soccer program. She was an All American college player in soccer and was a member of U.S.'s under-17 national team. Estrada played in four NCAA tournaments and was an all-WCC forward at Santa Clara. In 2015, Estrada was named Assistant Coach of Year by the NSCAA.

Estrada is from Fremont, Calif. Estrada now lives in Walnut Creek. Her teams have won five straight conference tournaments. Additionally, she has coached two NCAA Tournament-qualifying Spartans.

SJSU's recent success

The recent success of SJSU women’s football has been due to many players. Most notably, Dorthe Hoppius was named the team's MVP, but will not return to the Spartans for the 2018 season. Jamilecxth Becerra from Mountain West was also honored as the Newcomer of Year. He scored seven goals, including five that won the game. In addition, Darriell Franklin was named the MW defensive player of the year and named to the All-MW first team.

New facilities for Spartans have been key to their success. Spartan Beach, Spartan Baseball Practice Facility, and Spartan Beach were two recent additions. In addition to these two facilities, the Spartans are also preparing to open their new Spartan Athletics Center next year.

Tina Estrada's professional career

Estrada is the interim head coaching of the San Jose State women’s football team. She was previously an Associate Head Coach and Spartans assistant for the past four years. Lauren Hanson resigned after eight years. She was replaced by her on February 1. Hanson was the school's winningest coach.

Estrada was a standout player at Santa Clara University. Estrada also served as an assistant coach and associate director for several programs. She has the potential to become one among the most exciting young head coaches for women's division one soccer. Estrada is a great teacher, has excellent communication skills, and can lead.

SJSU's mental health resources for student-athletes

SJSU student athletes have several mental health resources. Many resources can be tailored to meet the specific needs of athletes. Support for Sport can help athletes locate mental health referrals, and allow them to share their mental health concerns with each other. LGBTQ+ Support includes stories and perspectives on being out in sports. ULIFELINE's college resources for mental health are also very helpful. Counseling Services also has a student-athlete self-help resource page. Health and Wellness Education also has a website with a variety of information about mental health topics.

SJSU's Counseling and Psychological Services provides quality services to students. The department examines every individual to determine if they are ready to be productive members in society. The department is located on the third level of the Student Wellness Center and offers counseling for a wide variety of issues.
