Esparza first rose to prominence in 2012 after signing with Invicta FC. Invicta FC 2, 2012, saw Sarah Schneider be defeated by Esparza. Esparza got on the back of Schneider early with a heel hook and then attacked the Argentine. She controlled her opponent's head and briefly tried to apply a rear-naked choke.

Cyborg won the second round with a takedown, landing a series punches. Coenen tried to escape but the "Cyborg", managed to score a takedown and land several power punches to end the round.
Cyborg is expected defend her featherweight crown against Coenen. The Strikeforce featherweight champion, Cyborg, won their first TKO fight. Coenen is coming into this bout after a streak of two wins. The winner will face either Ayako Hamasaki or Carla Esparza.

Carla Esparza, despite suffering nerve damage in 2007, has been able return to action in recent times. Rose Namajunas, who was Rose's opponent in the UFC strawweight division, defeated Esparza. She is expected in November to defend her title, against Zhang Weili (former champ). She posted recently on social media an update about her fight camp.
Following the accident, Esparza went to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with nerve damage. Her hospital bill was over $30,000, but she committed to fight. InvictaFC 7 was her next fight. She defeated Maya Hamasaki again. She later fought Claudia Gadelha, but Gadelha withdrew due to stomach illness.

Rose Namajunas & Carla Esparza, both former women's lightweight champions, have faced each in two title fights. Namajunas was awarded the title in April and it was retained in November. The bout was close through, but neither fighter got a knockout. Esparza won by 48 to 47.
Esparza had a record of 3-3 in 29 prior to this title fight. However, her win over Virna Jandiroba on April 2019 opened the door for a five-fight winning streak. In a COVID-quiet UFC APEX Las Vegas event, she beat Yan Xiaonan. She finished in less than eight minutes. In June 2019, she defended her title again by knockout in the first round.
