Every year, the WNBA holds a draft to pick new players for their teams. The draft draws players from a talent base of women's basketball athletes. The 1997 WNBA Draft was the first. There are now nearly 60 teams. The draft includes a wide range of categories such as speed, overall strength and athleticism. You also have the chance to win a new star.
Shakira Austin
The Lakers are expected this season to be a major contender and Austin will provide them with depth at the center position. Austin is well-suited to play multiple positions and can be trusted with veteran depth and players. Austin can play outside the paint well and Delle Donne will help her. Her defensive instincts are also excellent, but she will be tested by the WNBA's most difficult defenses.

Washington Mystics drafted Shakira Austin at No. The WNBA Draft's No. 3 pick. She is the sixth Ole Miss graduate to be drafted by the WNBA. Austin was a member of the Ole Miss Golden Eagles' two-season team. She earned first-team All SEC honors, and helped the team reach the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2007.
Mya Hollingshed
Mya Hollingshed served as a Pre-Woden Award Watch List member this year. However, despite her impressive statistics, she had never played basketball during her childhood. Her family is full of athletes. Her grandfather was drafted second by the Washington Bullets 1978. Her father played basketball in Grambling. Hollingshed was a soccer player in her senior and junior years. However, her mother found the sport too competitive.
Although the Las Vegas Aces considered her as a wing-player, they decided against it. They did not want to take any chance on her being available at Number. 11. Nevertheless, Hollingshed isn't likely to get passed up, and she'll still have a shot. It is probable that her WNBA professional career will begin in future.
Nyara Sabally
Nyara Sabally was the big man selected by New York Liberty in Monday's fifth round of the WNBA Draft. Sabally has suffered a knee injury and will not be playing this season. The team also selected Sika Kone, the No. After she had surgery to her right leg in March, the team selected Sika Kone as their 29th pick. Sabally was a top-pick because of her height, but her knee problems have made this a risky pick.

Not only was she the fifth overall pick but Sabally is also the sister to Oregon star Satou, who plays with the Dallas Wings. She is yet to be drafted in the WNBA but has been a strong player for the Ducks. She was drafted along with her sister in 2020, becoming the first siblings to reach the first round since Chiney & Nneka Ogwumike (2008 draft). Sabally may prove as great as her sister.
